A good rule of thumb for determining the size of the tank is by the number of bedrooms in the home. Which is typically a good indicator of a homes water usage. If the tank is small in comparison to the homes water usage, it could force wastewater out prematurely. Thereby disrupting the settling of suspended solids as well as breaking down organic waste by bacteria. The more wastewater that flows through your system, the larger the size tank needed.  This way everything can process faster without getting backed up or overflowing. 

Here’s a good rule of thumb, bedroom ratio to the size of your septic system

4	Less than 3,500	1,250
5	Less than 4,500	1,250
