The plumbing needed to keep your restroom running well is under constant stress. From clogged toilets, to full sinks, and to long hot baths, it’s a wonder our restrooms fare as well as they do. Regular maintenance can go a long way towards extending the life of your plumbing. These signs could indicate it’s time for some maintenance:

Pipes Knocking

If you hear pipes knocking as you run the sink or start your shower, you could have a serious problem. One possible cause of this knocking is called “water hammer”. Water hammer is an effect caused by the pressurization of water in your pipes after each use. Other causes may be loose support straps, high water pressure, and loose valves. The sound could even be caused by you pipes jerking around every time you open a faucet. Regardless of the cause, if this problem is not dealt with quickly, your pipes may bend, spring a leak, or break altogether.

Slow Drainage

Most slowly draining systems can easily be fixed using one of several methods. These include, pouring boiling water down the drain, using a pipe snake, and many other methods. However if you still can’t get your system to drain faster you may have a bigger problem. You could have a broken pipe, for example. This could pose a health risk and could cause mold to grow on your wall.

Oddly Colored Water

The water that comes out of your pipes should always be clear and look clean and drinkable. Any other colored water is a strong indicator that repairs are needed. Oftentimes a brown or reddish coloration could be caused by rust in your pipes or a cracked pipe. In these cases you should call a plumber as soon as possible.

Inconsistent Toilet Water Level

If the water level of your toilet is fluctuating regularly, you may have a sewer line problem. Chances are that if your toilet’s water level changes from day to day, you have a bigger problem. Call a plumber right away.
